Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Structural Engineering Association of Metropolitan Washington decided in 2021 to host an exhibition of their Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards instead of their annual gala awards celebration. The organization hoped to bring further awareness to the field of structural engineering, specifically within the local DMV region, by sharing the award-winning projects in a free exhibition for the general public hosted at the District Architecture Center in downtown Washington, DC.

Approach
We took an abstract and conceptual to the design approach for the project. Beginning with a look at the typical visual language of structural engineering, we developed 2 unique design approaches for the overall graphic identity of the exhibition that could be applied to the various exhibition elements. SEAMW was supportive and encouraging about a fresh, vibrant, and geometric approach to the design rather than a more formal, celebratory style typically associated with their galas. The exhibition was successful for its short run, pulling in mostly street-level visitors with no prior knowledge of the organization, helping to build awareness of SEAMW and its mission. Due to the success of the event, Studio Aorta is once again developing the exhibition for its 2022 iteration.
